Andy Robinson’s Career Success! Career Tip of the Day

"Helping people love what they do for a living and achieve lasting career success"

The Power of "Little Things" - They Make a BIG Difference!

Take time to DO the little things. It is often the smallest things that make the biggest difference. You never know what kind of impact your positive words or grateful actions may have on someone, even if it doesn't seem as if they really appreciate it.

Hold the door open for the person behind you, even if it means breaking your brisk walk. When someone asks you how you're doing, reply with an honest answer (not just "fine" or "good") and return the favor. Say please and thank you. Expect nothing from those who have no obligation to you and be pleasantly impressed when they deliver.

Show YOUR appreciation for the little things. People do nice things for us every day, and yet it often goes unnoticed by us. Identify the little things that people do for you (excellent customer service, holding the door open for you, taking an interest in your day, etc.) and take time out of your busy day to say thank you. Everyone appreciates being appreciated.

Little things really do make a BIG difference!

Adding Value Tip - The Power of "One More Minute"

We all make mistakes .... there's no getting around it.  In today's work environment, we're all being asked to do more, and our ability to deliver more requires us to "up" our cadence rate -- work faster, move quicker, etc.  In the rush of getting things done, the opportunity to "miss" something increases and the quality of our work product is prone to suffer.  The possibility of making mistakes consequently increases.

BEFORE you press the "Send" button on your email, BEFORE you deliver that "final" report to your manager, BEFORE you make that important call, and BEFORE you make that presentations, DO THE FOLLOWING:

STOP - Pause and take ONE MORE MINUTE and run through this CHECKLIST:

  • Consider having someone else proof the document for you.
  • Make sure you've run a grammar and spell-check on the document.
  • Give a final "cold read" of the document to ensure you've clearly communicated your intentions.  Consider reading the document to yourself OUT LOUD -- you may be surprised at what errors you'll discover.
  • Do I have crystal clear clarity on my key points and have I communicated those key points as clearly as possible?
  • Do I really need to send this email?  Would a phone call be better?  Do I need a "cooling off" period before I communicate this matter?
  • Am I directing this communication to the right person(s)?
  • Did I give this project / task / assignment the attention it truly deserved?
Begin this habit with the VERY NEXT deliverable on your plate and encourage your team mates and colleagues to do the same.

All the best to your Career Success....

Look for an Opportunity to Recognize Your Boss

All of us thirst for recognition and gestures of appreciation for work well done.  Recognition is energizing, uplifting and just plain feels good.  Some managers do a wonderful job of recognizing their employees and teammates, but all managers have room for improvement -- you simply cannot give too much recognition -- test that hypothesis sometime.

How about turning the tables and making it a point to offer recognition to your boss or manager for the great work and great things that he or she does?  Senior executives and leaders appreciate recognition just as much as we all do.  A sincerely written note of "thanks" or even verbal praise goes a long way.  Reach out and make your manager or boss feel better today -- help him or her understand that the team appreciates them.  Start the circle of giving yourself and help your boss or manager see the role that recognition can play in motivating and inspiring others.  You'll feel better too .... giving always feels good.

All the best to you Career Success!

The Simple Truths of Heart-Felt Customer Service - Johnny the Bagger - Truly Inspirational!

The short video clip, "Johnny the Bagger" - Demonstrates the transformational power of small, sincere acts of customer service kindness.

Great customer service comes from the heart. Great customers and client service can be taught...but it's best when it comes naturally, when it comes, not from the head (something you know you should do) but from the heart (something you are compelled to do).

The lesson from Johnny is that ANYONE in your company can make a difference if they want to. Johnny's efforts were truly from his heart and made a transformational impact on his company.

Time Management and Productivity - Just Test Drove a GREAT Web-Based "To Do List" Management Tool

Happy July 4th to You and Your Family!

A Quick Review of www.Toodledo.com:

One of my coaching clients recently tried a goal and task management tool and decided to adopt it as part of his planning and organization system.  With his recommendation, I gave the tool a "test drive" as well and LOVED it.  That tool, "ToodleDo.com," has both a free version and a premium version ($14.95/year) and is a feature-rich, wonderful application.

I used ToodleDo.com throughout the month of June, and by the end of the month had fully transitioned all of my goal-setting, project management and task management activiies to this tool.

Some of the key features I love about this application include:
  • Web-based; accessible from any computer anywhere
  • Pairs with an excellent full-featured iPhone application
  • Aligns VERY well with David Allen's "Getting Things Done" system
  • Fully integrated goal-setting and goal-achievement module
  • Integrates into Gmail and Google Calendar
  • Wonderful user-friendly interface
  • Nice Firefox add-on feature
  • Import an existing task/to do datebase
  • RSS integration - Access your to-do list with a special URL that can be read by any RSS feed reader
  • Twitter integration
If you've been looking for a great task management, "To Do List," and goal management application, I highly recommend giving ToodleDo a try.
